Day 4

Updated: Jul 1, 2019

Workshop 1: Lindsey Hughes of The Atkinson School, Exeter at her partner Liwonde Secondary School, Malawi teaching about Mental Health through Drama.

Breakfast at Liwonde Safari Camp: Scrambled eggs on toast. Tea.

Left at about 830am for a 15 minute drive to Liwonde Secondary School where we were greeted by the headteacher and Gideon, a science teacher who has 100 students in his class, who will be visiting us in the UK in October.

Lindsey discussed mental health and emotions, as part of the UN sustainable development goal for Health, and encouraged the students who had never done drama before to create freeze-frames and mini performances for their peers. All took part and were utterly fearless!

Becci and Gaby of ParticipateArts looked at historical figures and industrial structures. from the River Exe to produce monoprints and card constructions to create a birds eye view of the river.

Lunch at Liwonde safari camp: salad - lots of shredded cabbage!

In the afternoon we went on safari in Liwonde Safari Park within which our camp was based. We saw 5 lions relaxing in the long grass and evening sun after a kill. A large bachelor elephant strolled in front of our jeep, numerous impala, yellow baboons, bee-eater birds, guinea fowl, warthogs, antelope and water buck. Another beautiful sunset.

Dinner at Liwonde safari Camp: samosa, chips and salad

In the evening we were joined by local artists Mac and Akula who are working with schools for the Rivers of the World 2019.
